Tourist & Museum Railways in
Former Canadian National Railways 2-8-2 #3254
with an excursion operated by Steamtown National Historic Site.
& Auburn Railroad Kutztown to Topton, about 4 miles (6 km).
Standard gauge, steam or diesel hauled. Operates on various dates
throughout the year. Also offers freight services.
Historical Railroad Bellefonte to Pleasant Gap, on the tracks of
Nittany & Bald Eagle. Standard gauge, diesel hauled. Currently
operates only a few days during the year.
- Colebrookdale Railroad Boyertown to Pottstown,
about 8 miles (13 km) on the lines of Eastern Berks Gateway. Standard
gauge, usually diesel hauled. Operates most weekends from May to August,
and on a few other days of the year.
- Dutch Wonderland amusement park in Lancaster has a
miniature railway and a monorail. Park open weekends late April to
early October, daily late May to early September.
- East Broad Top
Railroad Rockhill Furnace to Colgate Grove, about 5 miles (8 km).
3 ft (914 mm) gauge, usually steam hauled. Planned future extensions,
which may eventually include the whole of the 27 mile (43 km) line
between Aughwick Mills Bridge and Woodvale, and possibly a 2.5 mile
(4 km) branch from Coles to Joller.
City Trolley Museum historic trams (trolleys) from the Museum
at the Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton to the Lackawanna
County Stadium in Montage, partly with on street running and partly on
dedicated track, some of which follows old railway and interurban
routes. Operates Thursday to Sunday, late April to December.
- Everett Railroad offers various steam or diesel
hauled excursions on sections of its line from Holidaysburg or
- Harrisburg, Lincoln & Lancaster Railroad
line about 1¼ miles (2 km) in length in the Stone Gables Estate,
Elizabethtown. Possible future extension to about 3 miles (5 km).
Standard gauge, steam hauled. Open to the public Saturdays from
July to October, also for special events and by private charter.
- Lehigh Gorge Scenic
Railway Jim Thorpe to Old Penn Haven, about 8 miles (13 km) on the
tracks of Reading Blue Mountain & Northern. Standard gauge,
usually diesel hauled, may be steam hauled for special events.
Operates most weekends throughout the year.
& Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society Muddy Creek Forks
to Laurel, about 3½ miles (6 km). Possible future extension from Muddy
Creek Forks to Bridgeton, a further 4½ miles (7 km). Standard gauge,
diesel hauled. Operates most Sundays and some Fridays and Saturdays,
late May to October and in December.
& Hummelstown Railroad Middletown to Indian Echo Cavern,
about 5½ miles (9 km). Standard gauge, usually diesel hauled with
some steam services in August. Also short distance rides in a trolley
vehicle on certain days. Operates Thursdays and weekends, mid June to
October (inclusive admission tickets for the caverns available),
weekends in October and certain other days for special events.
- New Hope
& Ivyland Railroad New Hope to Lahaska, about 4 miles (6 km).
Passengers may board at either terminus. Occasional longer excursions
are offered, including some to destinations on the Northeast Pennsylvania
Railroad. Standard gauge, steam or diesel hauled. Operates daily late
May to September, weekends and certain other days during the rest of
the year (Unsolicited audio on website)
- Oil Creek &
Titusville Railroad Titusville to Rouseville, about 17 miles (27 km).
Standard gauge, diesel hauled. Passengers may board or alight at
various stations. Operates weekends and some weekdays from June to
Trolley Museum historic tram (trolley) rides in the grounds of
the museum in Washington. Operates weekends from April to mid December,
daily from June to August.
Tunnel near Ashland has an underground tour of the former anthracite
mine in converted mine cars, and on the surface a steam hauled narrow
gauge railway over ½ mile (1 km) in length. Mine tours operate daily
from April to October. Steam trains operate weekends from May to October,
daily from June to August, or by private charter.
- Pittsburgh historic funiculars:
Incline from West End to Duquesne Heights. Operates daily
throughout the year.
- Monongahela Incline from Station Square to Mount
Washington. Operates daily throughout the year.
- Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad
has operated passenger trains between Reading Outer and Jim Thorpe
(about 50 miles, 80 km) but these are unlikely to resume in the
light of the closure of the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway from
Jim Thorpe. RBM&N plan a series of Santa Special trains
in late November / early December 2019, offering round trip
services starting from Minersville, Pottsvile Union, Reading
Outer, Schuylkill Haven or Tunkhannock Riverside Park.
- Red Run Express miniature railway in Red Run Park,
Rouzerville. Operates most weekends, June to August, and Sundays in
May and September.
Trolley Museum historic tram (trolley) rides at the museum in
Rockhill Furnace (next to East Broad Top Railroad station). Trams
operate weekends from late May to October.
- Steam into
History New Freedom to Hanover Junction. Standard gauge, steam or
diesel hauled. The steam trains use replica 19th century locomotives
recreating the journey of Abraham Lincoln to Gettysburg. Possible
future interchange or through running with Stewartstown Railroad.
Operates weekends, holidays and many weekdays from March to mid
- Steamtown National
Historic Site Scranton to Moscow on the tracks of Delaware Lackawanna.
Standard gauge, diesel hauled. Operates on certain weekends from
late May to late October, with some journeys extended to Gouldsboro or
Cresco. When this service is not operating a short trip in the opposite
direction through Scranton yards is offered most weekdays and Saturdays
from late April to late November, extended on Sundays to Nay Aug Gorge.
Some of these short services are steam hauled.
- Stewartstown Railroad Stewartstown to New Freedom,
about 7½ miles (12 km). Standard gauge, petrol locomotive hauled or
motorized works trolley. Operates most Sundays and some other days
from April to December. Possible future interchange or through
running with Steam into History. Possible future freight operations.
- Stourbridge Line Honesdale to Lackawaxen, about
25 miles (40 km). Standard gauge, diesel hauled. Operates the full
length of the line most Saturdays from late May to mid October, and by
private charter. Shorter journeys are available on the same days, on
Sundays during the same period, and on a few other days of the year.
Railroad East Strasburg to Paradise, about 4½ miles (7 km). Standard
gauge, usually steam hauled. Operates daily, late May to October,
weekends and some weekdays in November and December. Dining services
operate at certain times. Also operates some freight services. East
Strasburg station has a steam hauled miniature railway, and a short
stretch of standard gauge track on which a traditional hand propelled
track maintenance trolley may be operated.
- Tioga Central
Railroad Wellsboro to Hammond, about 12 miles (19 km) on the tracks
of Wellsboro & Corning. Standard gauge, diesel hauled. Operates
weekends and some weekdays from late May to mid October.
Kempton & Southern Railroad Kempton to Wanamaker. Standard
gauge, steam or diesel hauled. Operates Sundays May to October,
Saturdays in July, August and October, and by private charter.
Chester Railroad West Chester to Glen Mills. Standard gauge,
diesel hauled. Operates every Sunday during the summer and various
Saturdays and Sundays from April to December.
- Williams Grove
Steam Engine Association site in Williams Grove, near Mechanicsburg,
has a ½ mile (0.8 km) standard gauge line. Steam trains operate on a
few days each year for special events, and steam or diesel locmotive
driving experiences are available on certain other days.
