The information given here is intended for general guidance only. In particular, any information regarding the potential or possible healing properties of various stones should in no circumstances be regarded as a substitute for a consultation with a properly qualified practitioner.
These materials may resemble rocks, but in fact represent the productions of animals and vegetables. They carry with them some of the energies of the animals or plants of which they were once a part.
Not listed here, but in some ways having similar properties, are fossils. These were once animals or plants which became buried in the earth. Then, over a period of thousands or millions of years, natural processes caused their tissues to be replaced gradually by stone, so that what is left is a stone replica of the animal or plant as it lived.
| Amber | A natural resin exuded by certain trees, and hardened, possibly over thousands of years. It occurs in a variety of colours, the most familiar being a golden yellow or orange. The most interesting (and expensive) specimens may include insect remains, but this does not appear to make any difference to the metaphysical properties. | Opens and cleanses the Chakras. A purifying energy. Promotes physical vitality, openness and unconditional love. Assists with choices, affirms vows and promises. Said to give good luck to warriors. Aligns the ethereal energies of the physical, mental and emotional bodies. Eases the processes of birth, and rebirth. Used to treat goitre, disorders of the kidneys and bladder, and infections generally. |
| Pearl | A lustrous type of calcium carbonate, secreted by certain molluscs as a protection from foreign bodies. Most pearls come from oysters, but tiny specimens are sometimes found in mussels. Nearly all jewellery quality pearls are cultivated, that is a foreign body is deliberately introduced into the oyster. Wild pearls, which are often small and irregularly shaped, are just as valuable from a metaphysical point of view. All pearls should be handled regularly (preferably worn in the case of jewellery), or they will tend to lose their lustre. | Gives purity of body and mind. Promotes faith, charity, and personal integrity. Opens channels for spiritual guidance. Used to treat disorders of the digestive and muscular systems, to aid fertility and to ease childbirth. |
| DON'T BUY | Corals, Shells, Turtleshell, Ivory that appears to be of recent origin. Quite apart from the fact that it may be illegal, you will be doing serious harm to fragile wildlife stocks. Even items that are legal to trade, such as Paua and Abalone shell, may be damaging the population of these creatures. Of course, if you find a nice, genuinely old item in an antique shop, that might be another matter - it is up to you. | |
