Train Operating Companies - Freight
Great Britain has several Freight Train Operating Companies, by
far the largest of which is:
EW&S operates most of the freight trains in Great Britain.
Its subsidiary EWS International carries freight traffic to
and through the Channel Tunnel.
Other operators in Great Britain include:

Rail Services
Set up as subsidiary of BNFL for the movement of nuclear flasks by rail,
DRS now offers general railfreight services.
- Eddie Stobart Rail
Long established road haulier now diversifying into rail
- Freightliner Limited
An intermodal carrier specializing in moving containers by
rail
- Mendip Rail
A company jointly owned by Foster Yeoman and Hanson Quarry
Products. Provides locomotives and trains for the transport of stone
products from the two companies' quarries in Somerset, although
traincrews are provided by EW&S.
- GB
Railfreight
A company which started out by operating infrastructure
maintenance trains for the national network and has now expanded
into the general railfreight market.
- Advenza
A company targetting the pallet load market, initially
between London and Glasgow.
- Jarvis Rail
Infrastructure maintenance trains, including the Fastline
locomotive fleet.
- Harsco Track
Technologies
A supplier of track maintenance equipment, Harsco has applied
for a license to run its own trains.
- JST Services
A timber hauling business in South Ayrshire, Scotland, JST
has been awarded a grant to provide a rail service, which will
probably be operated by a new type of freight multiple unit (FMU).
