Railways in London
Policy for all surface transport, road and rail, in the Greater London area is
coordinated by Transport for London
(TfL), a body reporting to the Mayor
of London. The Mayor is an elected official who, with the London Assembly, has
responsibility for all matters of local government relating to the capital, and should
not be confused with the largely ceremonial position of Lord Mayor of the City of London.
The following aspects of rail transport come under the overview of TfL:
- The London Underground
- Docklands Light Railway
- Overground Network: the suburban network operating over the tracks of
Network Rail. Because the tracks are shared with long distance services, TfL will
share responsibility for these with SRA. The Overground Network includes
proposed new services such as:
- Crossrail, a major new
line under central London and
- East London Line, to be transferred from the Underground to Network Rail
and incorporated into a wider network of services.
- Superlink is a proposed
alternative to the Crossrail scheme.
