In an increasingly international market, many parts of the modern railway in Great Britain are sourced abroad. Much of what remains of the British railway industry is itself mostly in the hands of multinationals. Nevertheless, there remains a substantial snd internationally respected railway expertise in the country, exemplified by the entries on these pages.
Under British Rail, Derby was once a large railway centre with the Locomotive Works, Carriage Works, and the prestigious British Rail Research: but it was just one of many large centres. Now, several years on, Derby has established itself at the heart of the modern rail industry. In addition to the Derby works of Bombardier, a variety of consultancy firms perpetuate the expertise established by the Research Centre. There is also a major railway training facility.

Bombardier Transportation with factories in Derby and Wakefield, manufactures and repairs trains for railways, metros and trams. Now the only major manufacturer in the UK.
Pandrol is a world leader in flexible rail fastenings, but my main reason for listing the company here is to include the above graphic, which vividly illustrates the principle that good engineering solutions are often aesthetically pleasing.
